Tool catalogue and execution evidence

A function exposed at a particular step

A tool is a host function described to the model by name, parameters and description. The model proposes a call; the runtime routes it to the function. The host chooses which functions are exposed. The function catalogue and Catalog.Names, the business component list, are different objects. Demo060 exposes only a reader for that list; it creates no database row.

Name the intent, limit scope

process and “Processes a request” leave many interpretations open. find_invoice_by_exact_id specifies a read by exact identifier; its description identifies the fixture, missing case and lack of refunds. Demo110 sequentially compares these descriptions using the same function. Reducing the catalogue to the need avoids exposing a mutation when reading is enough.

A good name helps selection without becoming permission. Code must still check parameters and preconditions. To compare catalogues, record input, expected tool, actual tool, arguments, status and response. One successful run does not measure reliability; the three historical EP012 filming options are no longer the current program.

Explicit results

LookupResult separates Found, NotFound, Refused and Error. Only Found with a value permits displaying that value. Failure is not an invoice to complete by intuition. INV-001 and INV-404 belong to a simulated fixture: no billing service is queried. For mutation, ToolOutcome distinguishes Created with ItemId from Invalid, Refused and Error without an identifier.

Current contracts are deliberately small: LookupResult contains Status and Value; ToolOutcome contains Status, ItemId and Detail. They do not constitute a durable correlated journal. Approval proposal and call identifiers bind an exact decision; persistent audit and correlation are developed later.

Before a call, check permission and arguments; during the call, retain the structured result; afterward, build an answer consistent with evidence. In Demo120, ToAnswer() builds the factual host answer from the last observed result. Assistant text is displayed separately and can contradict it.

No call and no evidence

“I looked up the invoice” is not an observed invocation. Demo060 records calls in observed; Demo120 cannot provide a verified answer if that collection is empty. If INV-404 returns NotFound, do not invent an amount. In the backlog, a “created” declaration without a Created result and a SQLite row establishes no creation.

What tools do not guarantee

A genuinely executed tool can be the wrong tool; a correct result can be misreported. Descriptions replace neither allowlists nor tests. Metrics, durable journals and MCP controls are developed later. No comparative model or catalogue measurement was run for this page.
